Red Snow,

Tsui Hark

the comic which has
never been released

I came back from Canada in 1998 filled with a passion for drawing; but I had started drawing again from 1996. During that year, I was in Los Angeles doing post-production work for the film Double Team; those days in a foreign country, however, had given me plenty of opportunity to pick up a habit which I had abandoned for so many years.

As many of you might know, years ago I was studying at the Texas University, where I came under the influence of art and painting. I was actually quite addicted to it. During those years, apart from taking lectures and doing part-time jobs, I spent four to five hours a day doing nothing but drawing. Most of my pieces were very large.

One day, however, the bad news came.

I can still recall the night very clearly: it was a very peaceful Saturday night and I was chatting with some of my schoolmates right next to my block as usual. All of a sudden, I saw my roommate, who only had his pants on, running madly along the road crying out my name. I was completely surprised to learn that our home was on fire!

Thousands of ideas came into my mind, but I could hardly speak a word. The firemen came and left, leaving a scorched house in ruins; all the paintings were gone, but it was the fire, however, that was to prove crucial to my life. My passion of drawing, following the destruction of my work, disappeared completely. Since then, I have not taken painting very seriously.

But in 1996, I was in US again. The life there was so leisure, which made me feel like having too much time to spare. Everyday we drove past a gallery that sold all kinds of painting tools. So one day, I told my wife, "I feel like to drawˇK"

I believe there are ways for people to reclaim their past; through drawing I can go back to my teens again, back to some things long forgotten.
